Tips for Improving Success Rates with Beginning Readers

1. Read with your child every night for at least 20 minutes. Read aloud to him/her and then have your child read to you. Select very easy books that your child can read with ease.(See #6)

2. Have your child “label” your family room and kitchen with index cards – window, refrigerator, stove, etc. These are sight words and will be seen every day by your child.

3. Turn off the television and let your child see you reading!!! Read the newspaper, read a magazine, read a book; just read!!

4. Put your child on these websites when at home:

5. Go to the public library and have your child get a library card. Then have the librarian assist you and your child in checking out several books that your child is interested in.

6.  Don't give up-keep reading! Here are a few suggestions for beginning books to read with/to your child:

a) Bob Books - These come is small, leveled sets. Excellent for beginning readers.

b) Dr. Seuss books- These are excellent for reading to /with your child. The rhyming patterns and nonsense words are great for children as they learn to decode.
